Is English the world’s Lingua Franca, meaning primary language? A report from the British Council announced that by 2015 an estimated two billion people will start learning English around the world, and three billion people – half the planet – will be speaking it. However, English will not become the Esperanto and dominate global language learning as Arabic, Chinese and Spanish are set to rise in importance as well. The trend is towards “linguistic globalization” and multi-lingualism, not bilingualism, and definitely not monolingualism. Greek, on the other hand, once considered a lingua franca during the Apostle Paul, helped the spread of the Gospel by providing a common language but its time is done. Today, English is the new Greek and is helping the Gospel be spread to the four corners of the world even by the internet. Although English will escalate in popularity. By 2015,  English will be taught worldwide at elementary level, and many universities across the world will choose to teach in English. This suggests a wake-up call for traditionally lazy and monolingual Americans and Britons, who tend to shun language learning because of their “everyone speaks English” mentality. Brits and Americans will be left behind in a future poly-lingual world. |

The United States evolved from a 1980s pariah into the new millennial capital of the New World Teen Culture. American culture from music and clothing to you name it has spread around the world. They may burn the stars and stripes but never their Jeans or their Hip Hop CDS. Many of these teenagers are also learning English to sing along with the music. This presents a tremendous opportunity for missions to reach out globally for the first time since the Apostle Paul preached the Gospel in the Greek language to the many ethnic groups in the Roman Empire. Because of the common language the Gospel quickly and easily spread. Today we have the same opportunity. Contact us today! |
